When in Ilocos: Visiting the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation; Richel Goes Places

I can’t tell you the exact date when we visited Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. It’s been three and a half months since I made the trip and the dates all mashed together in my head. All I can tell you is how beautiful the place is and how I long to return as soon as I could. I have to admit that nature doesn’t impress me as much as adrenaline-giving rides or attractions, but this place definitely impressed the socks out of me.

This has either have to be my second or third day in Ilocos and Ilocos’ beaches are as blue as they can be and are the best ones I’ve seen yet. Add a few gorgeous rock formations and a distinct feel of being disconnected from the buzzing, digital, busy as heck world and you have Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

From the drop-off area, you have the option of walking or riding a horse to reach the actual rock formations. It would have been really cool to ride a horse, but the walk is only five to ten minutes so it’s not that much of a hassle. Plus you can take pictures anytime unlike when you’re in a horse! Various vendors also sell cold drinks and ice candies along the way so you don’t have to worry about beating the heat.

I ended up so in love with the place that I voluntary walked around so much (and in mud) just to take photos and even went up rocks. I also took lots of videos which you can take a glimpse of at my travel VLOG. The pictures, on the other hand, I will show you below:

We only managed to stay for an hour or two as we have other places to go but I finally see for myself why this place is on top of every Ilocos itinerary. Photos and videos doesn’t do it justice!

Where’s the best rock formation you’ve seen so far?

Thanks, Joyce! I want to be able to visit Ilocos soon, but given that it’s really, really far out, the future’s not looking too good. Hehe.

Are those in the second photo all your relatives? Or other tourists too? Parang ang daming tao, kasi nung nagpunta kami parang less than 10 people lang yung nakasabay namin hehe
I was a little grumpy when we went here kasi sobrang init haha I didn’t know there’s a horse because we didn’t find one. I just knew about it when I saw other photos from other blogs haha but walking was just fine 🙂

Noooo. Other tourists. Medyo crowded nung nagpunta kami. Swerte nyo! Hahaha.
The heat and weather was fine. December naman kasi tapos every few minutes, nabili kami ng ice candy or cold drinks! Hehe.

There’s so many of you traveling together! Ang saya! It looks like the way is more paved today that before. When I went there like 7 years ago (???), it’s so mabato and ang hirap maglakad papunta dun sa big white stone. And sobrang lakas ng alon!

Entire extended family! Hahaha. We filled up two vans. Yeah, it was a really smooth walk! Which is great – since we’re travelling with kids and oldies. Hehe.

That’s definitely a cool place! I haven’t seen that many rock formations… I guess the Three Sisters we have here in the Blue Mountains is pretty cool.

Wow this place looks absolutely stunning, it looks like you had an amazing time there! And I would have probably taken the horse riding option as I’m pretty crazy about horses haha. The best rock formation I have seen so far was undoubtedly the Grand Canyon (if that counts). Or Stonehenge. xx

I’m kind of scared of horses since the one time I saw a horse topple over his rider and injured her. Grand Canyon and Stonehenge are on my travel list! 😀

It looks amazing, Richel! Definitely a place worth seeing. I love places with beautiful views and rocks. My favorite one has to be the one I visited when I was in Cyprus last summer, can’t really remember the name of it, but it was an island 🙂

It was a nice scene! If it weren’t that hot out, I would’ve ventured into the other side of this rock formation. 😀
