Sandboarding and 4×4 Adventure at Paoay Sand Dunes, Ilocos

Paoay Sand Dunes

If you’re going to Ilocos, please don’t pass out on the Sand Dunes at Paoay, Ilocos Norte. This was my favorite part of our trip and the adrenaline was something I’m still craving for. But fret not for those who are scared of adrenaline pumping activities, for if my mother can survive this, then so can you.

Paoay Sand Dunes is a 88 kilometers long of pure sand alongside a beach. It’s like being stuck in the middle of desert but not as hot as one. Win-win, right? It has also been used to shoot some scenes for movies like Mad Max, Ang Panday, and Born on the Fourth of July. That should say something on how beautiful the place is. For only PHP2500 (USD60) for 4 persons, you get 1 hour of use of the 4×4 and as many sand boarding as you can do within the same time frame.

Paoay Sand Dunes

The 4×4 ride was intense and you really have to hold on to the sides or else you’ll fall off. Literally. It was like a roller coaster ride without the seatbelts! There was one time where the driver drove the 4×4 straight to the cliff. I thought he’s going to kill us! Hahaha!

The sand boarding was heart-pumping. I was pretty sure I’m going to fall off my face – especially since I saw another girl face-plant into the sand. I actually did fell on 1 of the 2 tries I did. The good thing is the sand is so pure so it doesn’t hurt at all. I just wished I didn’t end up eating the sand. Yuck.

And if you noticed from the photos/GIFs, it’s like it was only our family on the sand boarding. Aside from two people who went for a few tries, we were literally the only ones in that slope. Which is good. Which means I didn’t embarrass myself in front of strangers. Next time, I’ll try sandboarding while standing up!

Have you tried sand boarding?

It was the best part of our Ilocandia trip last year, and I’d do it all over again if there’s an opportunity! Haha konti lang din tao nung pumunta kami, maybe because it’s almost sundown already when we went.

You should have tried sandboaring while standing! First try ko nakaupo din, para lang ma-feel haha then next try, nakatayo na and yes, success! 🙂

We also went around 5pm-ish already. Got a glimpse of the sunset when we were on our way back! Apparently, there’s also two sites for sand-boarding. We were the only ones in this one and the other one has a flock of people around it. Hehe.

I saw someone face-plant into the sand while standing up! I admit to being a tad scared kaya di ko na ginawa! Hahaha! Next time.

I didn’t try this when I went to Ilocos because the 4×4 looks scary. But when I read this post, I wish I did tho.

That’s too bad! The 4×4 wasn’t as scary as the sand-boarding and you can opt to ride beside the driver! 🙂

And I want to experience it again! I think it’s only available in a few places so I took the chance even if I was really scared when I did it for the first time. Hehe.

I can’t believe the sand boarding worked. When I was in Vietnam, I went to a place with red sand dunes of course for free. I wanted to sand board, rented a board, but it didn’t work haha anyways, great experience for you 🙂
